Legend of Galactic Heroes Novel Translations
Mark Ma’s Translations
Peter Tan’s Translations
I don’t usually post things I haven’t had any part in, but Mark Ma’s translations, once posted to his Berkeley page, have been around since the mid-1990s but no one I’ve spoken to seems to have ever heard of them since the page has been off-line over a decade. That’s just too sad, to see all that effort go by unnoticed, especially when there are fans who are hoping to see more novels translated. So my hoarding kind of came in handy for once! So spread it, read it enjoy it.
The novels have some pretty neat art inside too, if you ever get a chance to flip through them, it’s where all those images up there came from. If you are unfamiliar with the series I’d highly recommend the anime. Unlike pretty much any war story I’ve seen in media, there is no great evil or bad side. Both sides of the war are full of good, if sometimes quite flawed, people with families, motivations, ambitions, and convictions of their own. It focuses on two protagonists on opposite sides, Reinhard von Lohengramm, a young noble rising through the ranks to protect his family, and Yang Wen-Li, the son of a merchant thrust into military service to pay for his education. There is a diverse and captivating cast on both sides, but no one has plot armour so try not to get too attached to anyone. If you haven’t seen it already, check out this guide to viewing order and start you adventure. Odd as it sounds, I recommend the Laserdisc rips because the DVD is a remaster that redraws several episodes and it loses a lot of that old animation charm.
